MICHEL BASSOMPIERRE'S FRAGILE GIANTS ARRIVE IN NEW YORK
After touring Europe's major capitals, Michel BASSOMPIERRE's masterful animal sculptures will take up residence on Park Avenue (34th-38th Street) from May 2025, for a period of one year, with the support of Galeries Bartoux, The Patrons of Park Avenue (POPA), the Murray Hill Neighborhood (MHNA) and the City of New York.
These 9 monumental works exhibited in the heart of Manhattan are a powerful ode to the living world, but also a poignant reminder of its infinite fragility. Brown bears, polar bears and gorillas stand here as emblematic representatives of endangered species.
‘We need to create a sense of wonder. This reconnection with the beauty of nature is necessary to make people want to protect it’ says the artist.
MICHEL BASSOMPIERRE, GRAND MASTER OF CONTEMPORARY ANIMAL SCULPTURE
Born in Paris in 1948 to an artist mother and a scientist father, Michel BASSOMPIERRE developed a passion for drawing and the animal world from an early age. Since the early 1970s, he has been capturing and transcribing the spirit of ‘his brother’ animals.
With his anatomy and drawing skills perfectly mastered, he gets rid of the anecdote to get to the heart of the matter. In bronze or Carrara marble, his bears, gorillas, elephants, pandas and horses are distinguished by their precise, gentle shapes, veritable invitations to caress. Tenderness and poetry emanate from every curve and every detail. His works have won over collectors all over the world.
